Here is your question:
On Sunday, August 22, 1915, Laura Ingalls Wilder sent her husband a postcard from the Kansas City train station, reporting she had made her train connection. Laura was on a trip to visit her daughter Rose in California. In which city was Rose living at the time, and on what street did she live?

At the beginning of LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, THE MUSICAL, there is an excerpt from the Homestead Act projected onto the stage.

Signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln on May 20, 1862, the Homestead Act declared any citizen of the United States could “claim” 160 acres of surveyed government land, and set up a farm, or “homestead.” The land available through the Act was often advertised as “free for the taking.” Lincoln passed the Homestead Act at the height of the Civil War, partially as a strategic move to guarantee new states entering the Union would be free.

Over the last year or so, it’s been my distinct pleasure to serve as the Laura Ingalls Wilder Historical Consultant to LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, THE MUSICAL. And what a gig it’s been! My experiences have included developing the educational guide and trivia questions found on this website, checking the script for historical accuracy, writing content for the official souvenir program, and hosting a LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, THE MUSICAL trivia contest in the town of Keystone, South Dakota, where Carrie Ingalls spent her later years. I even weighed in on an online battle being waged about who was “cooler”: Anne of Green Gables or Laura Ingalls Wilder (the answer is obvious, and the obvious answer won the poll).

Two events stand out most in my mind: sharing a high-five with Melissa Gilbert at the cast party following the opening night performance last October, and watching my little niece’s reactions to the musical when we saw it together in Toronto (she really enjoyed the song “I Can Rock,” and has been occasionally rocking–while imitating Carrie–ever since). Best of all, this job–and I hesitate to even call it a “job,” because it’s been so much fun–allowed me to revisit (as if I ever stop “visiting” it), the life and legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder, and think about what makes her and the entire LITTLE HOUSE phenomenon so special to so many people.

One of the most exciting parts about being a “Bonnethead” (as hard-core LITTLE HOUSE fans are known), is visiting the places Laura and members of her family called home. From tiny hamlets in the Southern Tier of New York State to the crest of Russian Hill in San Francisco, there are many places far from “the prairie” that are part of the LITTLE HOUSE story.

So, for the next five Little House venues, I’ll post a new trivia question. The question will focus on the LITTLE HOUSE books, the musical, Laura’s real life and history, or the television series. The answer will somehow relate to the city (or state, or region) in which the musical is playing that week.

We Prarians are so proud of ourselves! In the two week drive for Equity Cares/Broadway Fights Aids. We collected 39,000 dollars. Thank you Sacramento, thank you Spokane!

All of the little house touring company is spending this week with family and friends celebrating Spring, Easter and Passover. We’re all looking forward to getting back together again next week in Spokane. In the meantime, we wish all of you the joys of the season.

We’re all loving the warm audience responses here in Appleton, WI. Today is our build for habitat for humanity. Seventeen of us are on the bus to the site. Michael Boxleitner who is Melissa’s son, who plays Nellie Oelsons kid brother in the show is our leader today. We’re all VERY excited. Next week is our easter lay off. We have the week with family and friends celebrating Passover, easter and just being home. We reunite as the Little House on the Prairie family in Spokane, WA the week April 6th.
